  18. A new environment variable MAKETEX_MODE has been introduced. It's
  19. intention might be, to feed dvips with some more information in case it
  20. outputs PostScript to a file instead of putting it in a pipe for
  21. printing, and a PK file (or glyph font) is missing.
  22.  
  23. In that case (output on disk i.e. dvips -o) dvips does not know which
  24. mode might be appropriate for font generation because it does _not_
  25. read config.<printer name>, and it even rejects the usage of -P!
  26. MAKETEX_MODE can help in such a situation.

  28. This help is dangerous, because you might forget about the set variable
  29. and change your printer name. What then?!

  31. Only a few users recall `env THIS=That command ...'. How to help the
  32. others?
  33.  
  34. So it's in my opinion better to leave MAKETEX_MODE out of kpathsea and
  35. dvips and train dvips to fetch more information by looking into
  36. $PRINTER (or -P <printer name>, which overrides) and understanding
  37. config.<printer name>. In all cases of output! This should be safe,
  38. this should avoid irritating warnings like: kpathsea:warning: No mode
  39. value defined.
